HIV/AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa at end 2001Globally by the end of 2001 the 40 million people infected with HIV/AIDS. Over two thirds of them (28.5 million people) were found in Sub Saharan Africa. This represents a 16% increase from the figures at the end of 1999. There were 2.2 million deaths from AIDS in 2001, which is almost three quarters (73.3%) of all the deaths in 2001. By the end of 2001 Sub Saharan Africa was home to four out of five of all AIDS orphans in the world, 11 million orphans in total. |
