Cost Of HIV/AIDS to Africa in 2000

  • The average cost of treating a person suffering from HIV/AIDS in the developed world is US$10,000 per year.

  • The average amount of dollars spent on health in Africa is less than US$10.00 per year per person.

  • The combined GNP for Sub Saharan African countries is US$320 billion.

  • US$253 billion – the approximate amount it would cost to treat the estimated 25 million or more HIV/AIDS sufferers at the end of 2000 in Africa for one year (at current costs).
