Dr.
John Kiwanuka Ssemakula
is a Ugandan currently working as a Public Health Consultant
with the Africa
America Institute (AAI) in New York,
where he is the Programme Manager and Advisor on the AAI HIV/AIDS
Initiative. He trained as a doctor at Ibadan University Medical
School, Nigeria, and Makerere University, Kampala in Uganda
where he received his medical degree. He subsequently took
a Masters Degree in Public Health at Dundee University Medical
School in Scotland, for which his Masters thesis was titled
"HIV/AIDS and the Healthcare system in Uganda."
In
2004 Medilinks with John Kiwanuka Ssemakula is holding Africa
Health Day, with the World Health Organisation Africa
Regional Office Amref and Africare at
the United Nations in New York.
Dr
Kiwanuka Ssemakula testified before the Senate Committee on
Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, at a Senate Hearing
Committee on Unsafe Health Care and the HIV/AIDS epidemic
in Africa - "Solutions to the Problem of Health Care
Transmissions of HIV/AIDS in Africa" on July 31 2003.
He
is also currently a participant and member of the "Safe
Health Care and HIV Working Group" that is looking
at the problem of the spread of HIV/AIDS through unsafe healthcare
in Africa. In 2003 Spring term, he was a visiting lecturer
at The Institute Of African Studies At The School Of International
Affairs, Columbia University And The Africa-America Institute;
"A NEPAD (New Partnership for African Development ) Political-Economy
Series for which he lectured on:
"Combating
The Human Resource Factor In Africa: AIDS, Other Communicable
Diseases And Economic Development" &
"AIDS,
Public Health, And Innovative Policy Intervention In African
Development"
Dr
Kiwanuka Ssemakula is also the moderator for the AAI African
Perspectives- a series of online discussions aimed at getting
the views and perspectives of Africans on contemporary issues.
The online discussions have included topics on Workforce Development
in Africa and the response of AfricanUniversities to the HIV/AIDS
Epidemic which was done in partnership with the Association
of African Universities. The African Perspectives is a component
of the joint AAI/ AVU - African Technology for Education
